Library Collections

The British School at Athens Library collections contain a number of visual records in the form of maps & aerial photographs.

Byzantine Research Fund

The Byzantine Research Fund Archive (BRF) is a unique collection of architectural drawings, photographs and notebooks created from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century by a small team of British architects trained in the Arts & Crafts tradition whose studies of Byzantium shaped the Byzantine Revival in later years.

Photographic Collection

The BSA Photographic Collection, housed in the Father Edward Bader Photo Archive Room, includes approximately 10,000 film & glass negatives, lantern and film slides, and prints. It includes a section of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (SPHS) negative collection donated to the BSA in 2003, images of the BSA premises and BSA projects, photographic albums donated by BSA members, and the negatives from the Payne/Mackworth-Young collection.

Personal Papers

The BSA Archive contains a variety of personal papers of archaeologists, architects, antiquarians and historians, who visited Greece before the foundation of the British School at Athens.

Excavation Records

The Archive is the principal repository for all Excavation Records associated with projects of the British School at Athens.

Knossos Research Centre

Knossos is one of the premier archaeological sites in Europe, with continuous occupation from the Neolithic through to the early Byzantine period, and offering near unrivalled opportunities for excavation and research. Supporting the ongoing study of this significant site, the Knossos Research Centre is located on the former estate of Sir Arthur Evans, close to his residence – the Villa Ariadne.

Fitch Laboratory

The Fitch Laboratory is a world-leading centre for science-based archaeology that has pioneered the application of scientific techniques in archaeological research in Greece. It runs an ambitious programme of research and training, building upon its unique facilities and expertise.

Early Civilisation in Northern Greece

From the notebooks and photographs of Alan Wace, this project provides a resource for the primary data that contributed significantly to the development of prehistoric archaeology in northern Greece.

1936 Exhibition Collection

The 1936 Exhibition Collection contains the surviving panels with original artwork from a large public exhibition at Burlington House at the Royal Academy of Arts in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British School at Athens. The exhibition, British Archaeological Discoveries in Greece and Crete 1886-1936, consisted of a special display of Minoan culture related to the discoveries at Knossos by Sir Arthur Evans as well as the excavations and other research projects of the School.
